ALEXANDRA JACOBY
Producer/Artist-Activist

On participating in Vagina Festival 2008:
Having worked on vagina vérité® for about eight years now, I can tell you that conversations that begin with the vagina, spiral out in all directions.
From sharing intimate experiences, to anatomical questions and health concerns, to discussions of cultural norms and expectations, to hate, violence and pain, to love—to all of our relationships, from partners, to family, to friends and co-workers—to our relationships with our bodies, vagina conversations are never the same twice.
Always, we laugh a lot, learn something new [“Really? I had no idea!” comes up often], and find that there is much that we share that we rarely ever talk about. Vagina conversations are about women’s experiences—of ourselves, of the world, of all the ways we are connected as women, and all the ways we are unique and special as individuals.
Vagina Festival is an opportunity to further engage in these conversations, initiated by fellow artists, in an environment of openness, mutual respect and celebration.
I am so looking forward to it!
About Alexandra Jacoby:
Alexandra Jacoby is an artist-activist. Since Sept. 2000, her primary focus has been making vagina portraits*, documentary-style close-ups, revealing the elusive faces of the vaginas—each strikingly unique. Jacoby is up to 75 v-portraits so far and looks forward to publishing them in a book, vagina vérité®. So women can see ourselves for ourselves.
"This project has been and continues to be the most meaningful work I've ever engaged in, gracing my life with so-many stimulating, fun, educational, moving and question-provoking conversations that began when a friend asked me: do you like the way your vagina looks?"
You can learn more about the project, as well as read over a 1000 pages of questionnaire-responses, articles, etc. about vagina-centric subjects at http://www.vaginaverite.com.

* The v-portraits are in fact vulva portraits. The project began when a friend of mine asked me whether I liked the way my vagina looked. vagina vérité® is my response to my friend [who thought there was something wrong with hers].
