DEIDRE ANN JOHNSON
Actress, THE VAGINA MONOLOGUES

On participating in Vagina Festival 2007:
I saw the listing in Backstage and was immediately drawn to it. I thought of all the actresses who have been involved in The Vagina Monologues through years and immediately thought, "hey if it's good enough for Glenn Close, it's good enough for me."

This event is not a bashing of men but rather a celebration of what it means to be a woman. And boy, do we need it! With negative imagery in rap lyrics and videos, continued vaginal mutilation in Africa and the horrible treatment of women in Afghanistan, we need to celebrate who we are. We need to counter the negativity with events like this that can serve as a beacon for all women, especially young girls, to show that we are more than our bra size, our dress size, or arm candy for men.

I think this event serves that purpose and will take on a life of it's own. I am extremely happy to be a part of it.

About Deidre Ann Johnson:
After becoming a physical therapist, massage therapist and a brief stint as a world champion powerlifter, Deidre began pursuing her lifelong dream to become an actress 3 years ago. She's studied at HB studios, School of Film and Television as well as The Atlantic Theatre Company.

VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN >
At least one out of every three women around the world has been beaten, coerced into sex, or otherwise abused in her lifetime — with the abuser usually someone known to her. Violence against women and girls is a universal problem of epidemic proportions.

reclaiming peace

V-Day's 2007 theme Reclaiming Peace seeks to make the connection between the worldwide anti-violence work of V-Day activists with our collective desire for peace and an end to armed conflicts. “We are saying that if a government supports the use of force, weapons, violence as a method of control and dominance, this models and gives license to the same kind of behavior at home,” stated V-Day Founder/Artistic Director Eve Ensler.
