KATHERINE SINGH
Visual Artist

Exhibited:
Untitled 2, Untitled 13.

On participating in Vagina Festival 2007:
Several generations of women in my family, including myself, suffered from physical, mental and emotional abuse. As a child growing up I was determined to break this cycle. My creativity is a form of therapy. I wanted to share my works as a part of the collective journey towards awareness and healing in the Vagina Festival.

About Katherine Singh:
A self-taught artist, my drawings are inspired by my imagination, memories, as well as my education and life experiences. For years I have focused my work on the idea of revealing and concealing a body's history and internal workings. This idea originated from both sciences' ability to uncover an individual's history (ex. Forensic anthropology) and my studies about how emotions and experiences shape and impact the body. Using gestural and laboriously controlled movements, I covey the essence of the figure and try to capture imagined internal and external structures. Using ink washes, areas of transparency and opacity are created to reveal and conceal elements.

VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN >
At least one out of every three women around the world has been beaten, coerced into sex, or otherwise abused in her lifetime — with the abuser usually someone known to her. Violence against women and girls is a universal problem of epidemic proportions.

reclaiming peace

V-Day's 2007 theme Reclaiming Peace seeks to make the connection between the worldwide anti-violence work of V-Day activists with our collective desire for peace and an end to armed conflicts. “We are saying that if a government supports the use of force, weapons, violence as a method of control and dominance, this models and gives license to the same kind of behavior at home,” stated V-Day Founder/Artistic Director Eve Ensler.
