TATIANA SUAREZ PICO
Poet

On participating in Vagina Festival 2007:
I am so honored to be a part of this event! The way many women see their bodies and the way other people see women's bodies must radically change. Women's bodies are either an object of shame or they're turned into meat. In this society and in many other societies, women are not taught to love and respect their bodies or body parts. I dare you to say "vagina" in 30 different loving ways, it isn't only great foreplay but also highly educational.

About Tatiana's poetry:
These writings come from my experiences as a queer woman of color. They could be called poems or performance art but in my mind they're simply my life told in a non-linear way.

About Tatiana Suarez Pico:
My most important statement as an artist is truth—in my actions and in my words. I have the feeling that the people who only think about money have a very narrow-minded view of the world. What will money mean if we don't have an ecosystem? What's money going to do if the ozone can't protect us from a burning sun? Why can't we as human beings take care of each other, not just ourselves, if only to preserve mankind? Perhaps we are doomed as a species; perhaps our intent is to self-destroy. Otherwise, I see no reason why millions of people die of hunger every day or why we have children making our clothes or why our governments do so little to clean the environment. Are our heads too far up our asses? I like to do work that deals with these questions and more than anything, I want to wake you up, in case you're not.

VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN >
At least one out of every three women around the world has been beaten, coerced into sex, or otherwise abused in her lifetime — with the abuser usually someone known to her. Violence against women and girls is a universal problem of epidemic proportions.

reclaiming peace

V-Day's 2007 theme Reclaiming Peace seeks to make the connection between the worldwide anti-violence work of V-Day activists with our collective desire for peace and an end to armed conflicts. “We are saying that if a government supports the use of force, weapons, violence as a method of control and dominance, this models and gives license to the same kind of behavior at home,” stated V-Day Founder/Artistic Director Eve Ensler.
