Christine Gedeon Visual Artist Exhibiting: The Bra Shop Medium: Blueprint Drawing Dimensions: 24" x 20" On participating in Vagina Festival 2008: The top view blueprint drawing of The Bra Shop is based on John Currin's painting of the same name. When his work was first exhibited, Village Voice critic Kim Levin had declared him a misogynist, and urged readers to boycott his show. Being a female artist, I'm interested in creating a new perspective of this satirized sexist image and reflect how our culture and media define what is sexy in a woman. Artist Statement: I've been creating top view architectural blueprint drawings for the last few years. My sources are well-known paintings,  images from the media, and words and dates.  I draft these images as top view plans, ultimately erasing the inherent human qualities and creating rigid mechanical form. A form appears physically abstracted yet remains fundamentally intact when viewed from the top. Figures become simple shapes and are reduced to their essence by the absence of all ornamentation. What's left is a summary that provides a type of clarity that I'm interested in using to depict these images.
