Consideration Liberation Army
Medium: video
Length: 12 minutes
On participating in Vagina Festival 2008:
The Summer of Thought was unleashed upon the citizens of Winnipeg in 2007. For three steamy months, Consideration Liberation Army agitated for unbridled thought and thoughtfulness. These insurgents communicated to the world via a website (considerationliberationarmy.ca), graffiti, and video communiqués. The stylish leadership of the movement has since gone underground, but the video missives remain and the revolution continues. In these days of anti-terrorist hysteria, artists assert what is truly frightening, truly transforming: ideas!
Artist Statement:
We are attempting to perform our realities into existence. Just as historically some lesbians have "passed" as men in order to fulfill their dreams/desires, we attempt to "pass" our work into mainstream culture. We seek to interrupt the expected boundaries of cultural forms, such as civic awards (Golden Boy Awards for Unscrupulous Political Behaviour, performance, 1993, 1995), music videos (We're Talking Vulva, 1990, What Does A lesbian Look Like?, 1994), journalism (A Day in The Life of A Bull-Dyke video, and In The Life artists' book, 1995), tourism (Winnipeg: One Gay City ad campaign, 1997) and even uniformed authority figures (Lesbian National Parks and Services performance, video and publications, 1997-present). By effectively mimicking the icons and packaging of dominant culture, we are able to present our own feminist, lesbian content.
