On participating in Vagina Festival 2008:
These are 3 light switch plates with line drawings of vaginas based on Betty Dodson's vagina portaits. The clitoris has been removed from each vagina, replaced by the toggle switch of the light switch. Wires hang from the piece, connected to nothing. You can flip the switch on and off, but nothing happens. These vaginas are disconnected, not unlike women who are disconnected from their own bodies.
Artist Statement:
Flip-flops, gloves, cigarette butts, and hoses-yucky items usually left alone when spotted on the sidewalk- these are the inspiration for my artwork. All the disposable stuff that comes into our lives for just a blip is funny, yet tragic. It should make us uncomfortable. Discomfort, mixed with humor, is the mother of change. By choosing materials we use everyday, my work is accessable and collaborative, and everyone gets to participate. Garbage men, lost-and-found-boxes, and dumpsters supply my art habit. Steeped in estrogen, I am heavily influenced by my middle-of-the-night job as a doula and experience as a counselor in an abortion clinic. Through sculpture I nurture, offering shade on a hot day, a ride across the river, or a safe place to sleep. This is how I add to the conversation.
