Hillary Harvey Visual Artist Exhibiting: Zoe with Magnifying Glass 2 Medium: C-print Dimensions: 16 x 16 inches, framed On participating in Vagina Festival 2008: "Zoe with Magnifying Glass 2" is part of the Maternity series. The image is a personification of the way in which children (and specifically in this picture, girls) approach the world - with curiosity. But it also speaks to the scrutiny with which girls and women are subject to. Zoe's expression perfectly exemplifies the dichotomy of someone who is both inquiring and tested. Artist Statement: In this developing body of photographs, the glimpses, sounds and smells of motherhood are turned into a fleshy subject. They transform into portraits of a feeling. The themes of love, memory and becoming seem to be inherent. The themes of relationship and discovery are just beyond. My daughter's presence is something larger - she is a muse. There is a narrative of unfolding. The photographs are waiting and hoping. Such is the poetry of mothers.
