Varuni Tiruchelvam
Wounds Unkissed
Role: Cellist

On participating in Vagina Festival 2008:
"I play in solidarity with people's deepest truths." Following her family's legacy of human rights work and her baby brother's legacy of love, she feels a responsibility to create love, justice, and peace within communities in America and Sri Lanka. She believes in the importance of challenging people to grapple with multiple truths in order to create common and complex understandings.
About Varuni Tiruchelvam:
Varuni Tiruchelvam has been playing the cello for 23 years. Classically trained, Varuni has been creating improvised music for seven years. She uses improvisation as a spiritual and political vehicle for connecting to the land and community around her. Her current music is influenced by the sounds within her soul, the dark melodies of the Romantic Era, from composers like Dvorak and Brahms, and the sense of place that American folk music invokes. Born in Sri Lanka, raised in England and Pennsylvania she improvises music to rediscover "home." Varuni has been composing and performing with YaliniDream for five years. Additionally, Varuni is a member of Stone Forest Ensemble, a classical/hip-hop/Afro-beat ensemble, with electric violin, emcee, cello, beat boxing, African drums, and Chinese pipa.
