Exhibiting:
Addressing the Box

Medium:
Photography
Dimensions: Addressing the Box is currently at about 8.5 ft wide by 4'3" high - 13 images comprised to make the one piece.

On participating in Vagina Festival 2008:
Addressing the Box came to me while I was at a business art school where the societal concept of women as objects became magnified by the work that was highlighted each quarter. After 8 quarters of seeing fellow students' supple breasts on the wall, and listening to my female classmates responses of disgust when viewing Gustav Courbet's 'Origin of the World' in Art History class, I decided it was time to take woman's body into my own hands, and .... well, address the box.

Artist Statement:
This continuing project is my attempt to transform the dominating sexual social response of women into recognition that we are friends, companions, lovers, mothers, and pioneers. Through my discussion with each sitter, she arrived at an accompanying concept or statement about one aspect of who she is. Addressing the Box is intended to pay homage to women for simply living in this ever-changing, domineering, convoluted world. Through these glimpses of the threshold to the most sacred source of human life, may we begin to alter our approach to women as we alter our approaches to ourselves. May we address women first as people, and let everything else follow.
